Episode 17 - From Students to Pro’s (at Annecy Animation Festival)

July 1st, 2019

Join Bry and Gem this month in a lighthearted episode comparing their pilgrimages over the years to the animator's holy land that is Annecy, home to the mother of all international animation festivals.

From fresh-faced students to work-weathered professionals, the girls explore how their networking skills have evolved over the years, and Gem reflects on how it felt to watch the premiere of a feature film that she worked on at the same festival that she attended as a wide-eyed student less than a decade ago.

Episode 16 - Ageism in Animation

June 1st, 2019

Gemma and Jess join the much-needed conversation on ageism in the animation industry. Let’s get talking!

It’s been several years since we started working in animation in 2012, we’re no longer juniors and are looking ahead to our futures, what happens to people who want to start a family? How do we stay up to date on our skills? Is unpaid overtime bad for seniors as well as millennials? Can we negotiate a fair salary based on experience? And how do we keep going when so many (women in particular) start to leave the industry due to burnout?

We want to look at ways to improve our roles in this beloved medium and keep diverse voices in this industry, please join our conversation on Twitter and let us know your thoughts and experiences! Tweet us @wineandzine

And you can find Bryony’s poll asking if you’ve worked with women in animation over their 30’s here: bit.ly/2QC4E7k

Episode 15 - Creating Diverse Characters (w/ Sarah Millman)

May 1st, 2019

Get ready to go on a real intense journey with us this week as Claire and Bry sit down with the indie comic legend Sarah Millman to discuss how to go about creating diverse characters.

Yeh, we know we're all super white girls, but that's actually the point - how do we, as the privileged majority, depict realistic fictional people of colour, LGBTQ+ or neurodiverse characters when we don't have those experiences ourselves, and where do we draw the line between stories that are ours to tell and stories that aren't? Together we scratch the surface of this HUGE topic, give you some tips on ways to research and things to avoid, and drop plenty of examples of the good versus the not so good (we're lookin' at you JK!)

Oh and click here to check out Sarah's Kickstarter for NPC Tea Issue 6!

Episode 13 - Arts Education

March 1st, 2019

Gemma and Zara reflect on their experiences in early education and how they found their creative voices in school, with perspectives from home education and mainstream school. The girls relive their mutual childhood dream jobs of being a vet or a farmer's wife (yes, not the farmer), their love for arty things and how it led them both to Newport University (and Yale College, Wrexham), where the WaZ collective was obviously destined to meet.

Zara's original 'featured favourite' experienced some audio issues so we're just gonna squeeze it right up in here!

"So I am recommending “Pyong Yang: a Journey in North Korea by Guy Delisle”. When I am not reading BL/MLM comics I am a sucker for biogeographical comics. Guy Delisle is an animator who has created a series of comics based on his experience as an animator for various studios around the world. The series is an interesting insight into different cultures and animation jobs he comes across."

Episode 12 - Working Abroad

February 1st, 2019

Bryony and Gemma are up to their elbows in the animation industry for this one, folks.

If you want to make a dent in the world of animation you'll more than likely have to go international with your career. That's exactly what Gemma did last year, so she's here to share her experiences of working in Angoulême, France (a place that's also very famous in the comics community). And when you don't speak a lick of French and haven't lived outside the UK before, this is as deep as the deep end gets!
